AN ASSESSMENT OF THE FISHERIES POTENTIAL OF GARIEP DAM

Although Gariep Dam was constructed in 1972, only minimal quantities of fish have been harvested from this system. Recently, permits have been approved for a community-based commercial fishery on the Eastern Cape Province shore near Venterstad. The purpose of this report is to provide: • an opinion as to the appropriateness of the suggested 50 ton quota • some management recommendations for new fisheries • some overall recommendations for the sustainable utilisation of the fish populations in the dam.
