AN ASSESSMENT OF THE POTENTIAL FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF A BARBEL FISHERY ON THE GREAT FISH RIVER, EASTERN CAPE PROVINCE

A two year programme entailing a biological assessment of the river as well as the development of fishing committees within three villages close to the river was undertaken. To ensure that the sustainable fishing practices that were advocated were employed, the fishing activities were monitored for a period of two years after the completion of the primary phase of the project.
