SHARK MANAGEMENT PLAN (SOUTH AFRICA)

This project provided the basis for a National Plan of Action for the conservation and management of sharks in South African waters (NPOA-Sharks). It was formulated in accordance with the agreed International Plan of Action for the Conservation and Management of Sharks (IPOA-Sharks) that has been promulgated by the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations (FAO). In accordance with the IPOA-Sharks protocol, each member state of the FAO that is targeting sharks in its fisheries has to compile a Shark Assessment Report (SAR). Amongst others, this report took into account issues pertaining to biodiversity, conservation and the management of sharks. Issues pertaining to the SAR could then be incorporated into the NPOA-Sharks.
